DREAM:

I am at a funeral and the cousin of my boss is there in an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, looking a bit like Randy Quaid in National Lampoon’s Vacation. We’re mingling.

A girl walks up and says “Randy, so good to see you -” but he cuts her off abruptly and not enthused at all: “Hey Carol.” There is a bit of silence and she slumps at the response.

Immediately after, another very similar looking girl walks up and says “Randy, hey, it’s me - Cynthia. From second grade?” Randy immediately lights up and hugs Cynthia (right in front of Carol mind you), and goes on and on about how amazing it is that this funeral event would allow the opportunity to see people from your past.

I witness this whole exchange and pull out my phone thinking: “Man, I gotta tweet this.”

“ Why do you think Obama hasn’t put a stop to torture renditions or warrantless surveillance? Do you think he doesn’t want to? Do you think he spent 25 years pretending to be a nice liberal while being secretly evil? Isn’t it more likely that the visible parts of the control system have been pretending to be much more powerful than they really are?

“ Tanna, the queen of the John Frum movement approached Daisey about an exchange program—she wanted Americans to come learn how to hunt and grow food. Daisey asked what the Americans could teach the islanders in return. Nothing, the queen said. She just wanted to help hapless Americans.

“ The Boont Dusties was also the name of a band. The last year any of us lived in Aracta, when we were all in our early twenties … we recorded an album virtually in one night. It consists of our drunk friends playing folk songs we barely knew, one last time before we began to really break apart from eachother. The album that was self-released and never distributed was called “Songs Our Parents Might Like”.

“ As Keel himself wrote, “I abandoned the extraterrestrial hypothesis in 1967 when my own field investigations disclosed an astonishing overlap between psychic phenomena and UFOs… The objects and apparitions do not necessarily originate on another planet and may not even exist as permanent constructions of matter. It is more likely that we see what we want to see and interpret such visions according to our contemporary beliefs.
